“A sassy, irreverent movie about art, fame, culture shock, and class consciousness” – Faith & Spirituality
Who but John Waters would have given his sweetest and most personal film a name like Pecker? Edward Furlong stars as the eponymous teen, an amateur photographer whose eye for the captivating oddness of everyday Baltimore life leads him to snap pictures of laundromats, strip clubs, and his shoplifting pal. But it’s all downhill once Pecker’s grainy, out-of-focus shots are “discovered” by an influential NYC art dealer (Lilli Taylor). Soon, Pecker has traded in his trusty Canon Caronet for an expensive Nikon N50, and his friends and family start to feel the sting of fame’s bright lights. Co-starring Christina Ricci as Pecker’s obsessive girlfriend, John Waters’ semi-autobiographical satire of art-world excess is a quirky, hilarious delight that reveals the softer side of cinema’s most notorious shockmeister. But don’t get it twisted, Pecker way be a touching ode to creative passion, but it’s still a John Waters movie, meaning this sweet-natured farce doubles as an R-rated romp, packed with jokes about teabagging, eating disorders, and the Virgin Mary.
