Brilliant Czech animator Karel Zeman’s eye-popping spectacle is like a Victorian illustration come to life. Inspired by the romantic fantasy novels Jules Verne, Invention for Destruction faithfully recreates the line engraving style of the pictures in the original editions of Verne’s work. Combining live actors with drawn animation, cutouts, matte paintings, miniatures, stop-motion, and meticulously detailed horizontal line filters, Zeman produced one of the most astoundingly original works in cinema. Original released in the US as The Fabulous World of Jules Verne, Invention for Destruction not only went on to become the most successful Czech film in history, it also basically invented steampunk.
But that’s not all! We’ve got some more Verne-inspired fantasia for you in the form of silent maestro Georges Méliès’ brilliant 1904 short The Impossible Voyage, playing immediately before the feature. Based on Verne’s 1882 play Journey Through the Impossible, this short is a fantastic showcase for Méliès’ wildly imaginative visual bravado.
