Join us for Jewish Journeys in Latin America — a vibrant musical exploration of the rich cultural tapestry woven by Jewish composers across Latin America. Jewish-Ukrainian-American pianist Maxim Lubarsky returns to KI with his quartet, featuring flutist Yulia Muselyan, bassist Fernando Huergo and drummer Mark Walker.
Blending the rhythms, colors, and traditions of countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and beyond, this program celebrates the unique voices of artists who were able to bridge Jewish heritage with the spirit of Latin American music. From passionate tango to infectious Brazilian rhythms and deeply expressive lyrical works, the concert offers a powerful journey through identity, migration, memory, and celebration.

is a virtuosic pianist of enormous stylistic versatility and musicality. A native of Odesa, Ukraine, Maxim was originally trained as a classical pianist at the famous Stolyarsky school of Music and Odesa State Conservatory. Already in school he developed a passion for jazz and received a scholarship to come to Berklee College of Music to further his studies. Maxim has performed and recorded with such musicians as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Terri Lynn, Carrington, Gabrielle Goodman, Rhiannon, Patrice Rushen, Greg Osby, Dave Samuels, and participated in St. Petersburg Music Fest (Russia), Spoleto Festival (SC), Beantown Festival (MA), Diacetum Festival (Italy), “Black Sea Weekend"; (Ukraine), ArtNaples Festival (FL), Cambridge Jazz Festival (MA), Salem Jazz to name a few.
Maxim is an assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music. He has also been invited numerous times with masterclasses in China, South Africa, Ukraine and Russia. Maxim continues a vivid performing and recording career, leading Maxim Lubarsky Group and working on several other projects with musicians from around the world.
Flutist and composer Yulia Musayelyan, originally from Moscow, Russia, is a.versatile performer and improviser across musical styles. She leads an original quartet and collaborates regularly with Fernando Huergo Quintet and Big Band,Lexington Symphony, Gaia Wilmer Large Ensemble, Greg Hopkins, Dario Acosta Teich, Vadim Neselovskyi, Louis Cole BigBand,and Brooklyn Orchestra, among others.
She was a soloist with TACTUS Contemporary Ensemble with guest conductor maestro Pierre Boulez, and has performed as a soloist on flute and Armenian duduk at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, and at the United Nations with the Brooklyn Orchestra.Her chamber works have been premiered at Symphony Space in NYC and featured in the 2006 film "Natalie Bonn."
Yulia has released 5 albums as leader, recorded on over 40 albums as a sideman, and toured the U.S., the U.K., Europe, Central and South America with various musical projects. Her quartet’s latest album, Strange Times, was released on Wherego Music in November, 2024. She holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music and New York University, and is currently the Assistant Chair of Ear Training at Berklee College of Music.
Fernando Huergo is a bassist, composer, and educator, originally from Córdoba, Argentina. He has recorded over 160 albums, including 11 as a leader and co-leader. Fernando has toured and given master classes throughout North, Central and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. An active performer on the jazz scene, he currently plays with Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos, Mehmet Sanlikol Big Band, Jim Kelly, Jason Yeager, Yulia Musayelyan. He has performed in groups led by Luciana Souza, Cesar Camargo Mariano Trio, Danilo Perez, Marta Gómez, Dave Valentín, Hendrick Meurkens, Dave Liebman, Dave Samuels, Joe Beck, and many others.
Fernando Huergo has performed with his quintet at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, and Cordoba International Jazz Festival in Argentina,as well as at Alexanderplatz Jazz Club in Rome, Italy, and Sunside Jazz in Paris, France, The Regattabar in Cambridge and in Marblehead, Northborough,Arlington, Lawrence, among others. His latest album, “Relentless” (Whaling City Sound, 2024) stayed in the top 50 of the Billboard Jazz Radio for 23 weeks. In 2010, he received a Grant from Chamber Music of America and the French American Cultural Exchange,which resulted in the recording of the album “Suite in Blue and White” (Wherego Music, 2010), in Paris, France. Fernando is a professor in the Bass Department at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught since 1996, and an adjunct faculty at Tufts University since 2001at Northeastern University and in New England Conservatory Preparatory Division, since 2017.
Multi-Grammy and Latin Grammy Award–winning drummer and composer, MarkWalker, is regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz and Latinmusic. He has performed and recorded with Paquito D’Rivera, Oregon (with RalphTowner), Michel Camilo, Lyle Mays, César Camargo Mariano, Andy Narell, Eliane Elias,and Arturo Sandoval. Featured on more than seventy recordings, including multipleGrammy winners, Walker’s career spans international tours, acclaimed compositions,and performances at major festivals worldwide. He is also a professor at BerkleeCollege of Music, on the jazz faculty at New England Conservatory, creator of theWorld Jazz Drumming Experience program, and has presented masterclassesworldwide.
