Driving Around the Block: a century ago intrepid motorists drove the rugged roads of eastern Humboldt County all the way to ridgetop Blocksburg, where local sheep ranchers once turned wool into small fortunes. Weary travelers passed the night here before continuing on to distant Mendocino County. And those who merely wanted a long day’s outing descended from the town’s heights to cross the Eel at Fort Seward, climbed to flower-covered Mail Ridge, and then reached the riverside forest that became part of Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
