The Best Singer-Songwriter You’ve Never Heard Of.
If Jeff Porter is known at all, it’s as the lead guitarist for The Rainmakers, the internationally acclaimed rock band from Kansas City, Missouri that had a couple of minor hits back in the ‘80s.
But even that is doubtful unless you are one of the band’s diehard fans. However, Porter is perhaps the mostunderrated singer-songwriter around. His newest album “Daylight” underscores this little known fact. Like his two earlier solo records, “15 Miles” and “Even With The Wind”, it is a mash-up of genres. And, like his earlier work, it showcases Porter’s clever word play and melt-your-heart lyrics.
The opening track, “Top of the World” was voted one of the the top ten listener favorites on “The Bridge,” the Kansas City alternative radio station. We first encountered Jeff quite by accident when we happened to catch his set at The Yorkshire Grey in London, back in 2017. The audience was small, maybe eighty in attendance, and some of those seemed unaware of what was taking place on stage. By the forth or fifth song we were completely gobsmacked. Who was this guy? We left with his two solo albums and a third by him and Rainmakers front man, Bob Walkenhorst.
He soon became one of the most listened to artists on our playlist, a position he has held for the last five years. We recently spoke with him via skype from his home in Olathe, Kansas, a small town outside of Kansas City, where he lives with his wife and their two dogs.
