The original Metropolitan Jazz Octet was founded back in the 1950s by saxophonist/arranger/composer Tom Hilliard. Tom went on to become a noted educator whose music and mentorship inspired many jazz musicians in Chicago. Included in that group are the leaders of the 21st century MJO: Jim Gailloreto and John Kornegay. In 2011, Tom gifted his entire MJO library to his former DePaul University School of Music students, passing on the torch to the next generation. Soon after an idea was born: To reshape the ensemble for the 21st Century.
MJO's latest project, "Jazz Unearthed," engages in musical archeology, presenting a set of Hilliard's miniature masterpieces that shine light on long-lost styles of jazz from the 1950s. Each composition embodies playful elegance, brilliant craftsmanship, and authentic personality.
