The Metropolitan Jazz Octet returns to Studio5 with Jazz Unearthed, a project that reaches back to the origins of the ensemble. The original MJO was founded in the 1950s by saxophonist, arranger, and composer Tom Hilliard—an influential educator whose music and mentorship helped shape generations of Chicago jazz musicians. Among his students was saxophonist, arranger, and composer Jim Gailloreto, who now leads the group and continues Hilliard’s vision. Today’s ensemble includes several musicians connected to that lineage.
Over the years, the MJO has brought a wide range of inventive projects to Studio5, including collaborations with vocalists Dee Alexander and Paul Marinaro. This time, they return to the source.
Their latest album, Jazz Unearthed, explores Hilliard’s original compositions—compact, masterfully crafted works that reflect the character and sophistication of 1950s jazz. The music is elegant, playful, and full of personality.
Expect an evening that is both a tribute and a rediscovery—music that feels timeless, yet freshly alive.
Join us for a night of musical time travel with one of Chicago’s most compelling ensembles.
