JAZZ NIGHT featuring Shabaka

On October 8, FUTURE IS COLOR® Studio Sessions welcomes Shabaka for a special live performance centered on his latest album, Of The Earth.

Widely regarded as one of the UK’s most influential musicians, Shabaka Hutchings has reshaped contemporary jazz and experimental music through projects including Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors. Across each body of work, he has moved fluidly between jazz, electronic music, spiritual traditions, and the sounds of the African diaspora—continually expanding the possibilities of rhythm, improvisation, and collective expression.

His solo practice marks a profound new chapter. After stepping away from the saxophone in 2024, Shabaka turned more deeply toward the shakuhachi and flute, developing a quieter musical language shaped by breath, resonance, and stillness. His return to the saxophone came with renewed clarity, informed by years of flute study across traditions from Japan, the Americas, and beyond.

Written, performed, produced, and mixed entirely by Shabaka, Of The Earth brings these evolving practices together within a singular creative vision. The album combines the rhythmic propulsion of his earlier groups with expansive choral melodies, layered production, alto flute, saxophone, and, for the first time in his recorded work, his own voice.

Built largely while traveling with portable instruments and production tools, the music is alive with movement—physical, historical, and diasporic. It reflects an artist unconcerned with genre and committed instead to intention, transformation, and the freedom to keep becoming.
