CHICK LYALL GROUP

This is a new line up formed to play original jazz-based compositions as well as improvisation and some modern jazz standards.

All the members of the group are composers and leaders in their own right. Here, we will mainly present the music of Chick Lyall with contributions from all band members.

CHICK LYALL – PIANO

Chick Lyall graduated with B.Mus (Hons) from Glasgow University studying piano with Gusztav Fenyo and composition under Lyell Cresswell.

He has been active on the Scottish Jazz scene as a composer and bandleader since 1988. He has worked with many of Scotlands leading jazz musicians as well recording and playing concerts with leading Scandinavian musicians such as Tore Brunborg and Joakim Milder.

He has had long associations with each member of the current group .....Tom Bancroft (Drums), Kevin McKenzie (Guitar) and Tom Lyne (Bass).....touring with them throughout the UK and also Europe and Russia.

TOM LYNE - DOUBLE BASS

Is a Canadian bass player who has been central figure on the Scottish Jazz scene for many years. He has led his own groups as well as working across a wide range of styles, most particularly in a duo with his partner, singer Sophie Bancroft. Tom is also a composer in his own right.

TOM BANCROFT – DRUMS

Tom Bancroft is an improvising drummer, composer, educator and creativity researcher based in Pathhead, Scotland.

Tom has had a diverse 40 year+ career engaged with music creativity .

This is partly as a musician – from being: a top level jazz drummer and composer for 40 years, and an innovator on a traditional instrument (the bodhran). Tom has played with a huge range of classical, jazz, and traditional musicians from a wide range of European and North American countries -from Sun Ra to Geri Allen to Martyn Bennett – as well as rich music collaboration experiences in Ghana, Vietnam, Taiwan, and India.

As a collaborative creator Tom has: either produced, mixed or mastered over 50 music releases; composed for film, dance and theatre; and worked in two long term artistic collectives – the Pathhead Music Collective and the Playtime Collective.
