Out of the Box ans Into Community
Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from two respected leaders who bring decades of clinical expertise, compassionate insight, and a deep commitment to supporting individuals and families in recovery.
This course is designed to equip mental health professionals with a deeper understanding of how community dynamics, social networks, and environmental influences directly impact the development and maintenance of substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.
Participants will examine how peer groups, cultural norms, access to resources, community stressors, and systems of care manifest in clinical presentation, how maladaptive coping strategies become reinforced within social environments, and how these dynamics shape treatment resistance, motivation, and relapse vulnerability.
Through an exploration of both theory and applied practice, clinicians will learn how to:
- Identify community-level patterns and social behaviors commonly seen in individuals with substance use disorders.
- Understand the developmental and relational links between social connection, emotional regulation, and addiction.
- Recognize how community stressors, access to support, and systemic barriers reinforce addictive cycles.
- Integrate community-informed interventions into assessment, treatment planning, and systems coordination.
- Strengthen therapeutic alliances by leveraging peer support, community resources, and collaborative care networks.
By connecting the “why” behind client behaviors with actionable, community-informed clinical strategies, this training empowers clinicians to more effectively support individuals and families through connection, access, and lasting recovery.

Kara Morrissey, MS, LPC, ATR-BC —
Lead Therapist, The Summit Wellness Group (Atlanta)
Kara Morrissey is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC) serving as a Lead Therapist for mental-health services at The Summit Wellness Group in Atlanta.
With more than a decade of clinical experience across acute psychiatric care, forensic mental health, juvenile justice, substance-misuse treatment, family counseling, and residential rehabilitation, Kara brings a deep, nuanced understanding of trauma, grief, substance use, and high-risk behavior.
Her therapeutic style is person-centered, humanistic, and experiential — not focused on labeling pathology, but on creating an environment of support, compassion, and collaboration. She specializes in working with clients who have undergone multiple levels of care, clients coping with critical incidents, grief, trauma, or co-occurring addiction and mental-health issues.
At The Summit Wellness Group, Kara uses her combined training in traditional talk therapy and creative modalities like art therapy — and she is certified in Brainspotting — to help clients heal, process trauma, and rebuild a sense of agency, identity, and resilience.
Kara believes that “no experience goes to waste.” For her, recovery and healing aren’t about focusing solely on problems — they’re about entering spaces filled with hope, human connection, and authentic presence where growth, restoration, and meaning can emerge.
