Join renowned Japanese artist, Tsuguo Yanai, visiting from Japan, for this inspiring Japanese Washi Paper Making, Kamisuki, (紙漉き) workshop.

The workshop takes place for 3 hours on Wednesday 12th August, 2026 2-5pm at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s Theatre Workshop.

During the workshop with expert Tsuguo Yanai you will be guided, step –by –step, through how to produce hand-made Japanese Washi paper, drawing on traditional Japanese paper making techniques. You will develop skills in working with the finely woven handmade bamboo frame, the hand built traditional wooden Japanese vat and using high quality naturally grown washi fibres that have come especially from Japan for this workshop.

You will produce a series of paper sheets of personalised hand-made Japanese Washi paper to take home with you whilst also learning about how the source plant grows, it’s environment and cultural significance.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, those who have experience and those who want to try something new. All the materials and tools are provided.

The course skills provide will offer you a strong foundation to independently and confidently go on to develop further paper making projects of your own.

It is advised to book early as there are a limited number of places, and to arrive a little before the session, to settle in and meet and get to know Tsuguo Yanai.
