Japanese Painting onto Silk Fans

Step into a slow, sensory afternoon of art, coffee, and quiet creativity.

Join us for a Japanese painting workshop set inside the light-filled atmosphere of Bold Street Coffee. Settle in with a drink, maybe something sweet, and let yourself slip into a different rhythm. For a couple of hours, you’re not rushing anywhere - you’re an artist.

Guided by an experienced local teacher with over 16 years of practice, you’ll be introduced to traditional Japanese techniques using beautifully tactile materials: bamboo brushes, sumi ink, Gansai Tambi 顔彩耽美 colours, mineral paints, and delicate touches of gold leaf. Your canvas? A luxurious silk fan and by the end of the class you'll have something to proudly display at home.

We’ll draw inspiration from across Japanese art history — from Ukiyo-e to the decorative beauty of the Rinpa School, alongside carefully chosen contemporary references. Each workshop is unique, shaped by seasonal themes and a fresh creative focus.

Whether it’s your first time picking up a brush or you already love to paint, this session is designed to feel welcoming, relaxed, and quietly inspiring. You’ll be guided throughout, but there’s space to experiment, to play, and to make something that feels entirely yours.

What to expect:

• A calm, sociable workshop blending creativity and relaxation
• Hands-on guidance from an experienced artist
• Time to enjoy drinks and food from the café as you paint

Materials (all provided):

• Sumi ink
• Gansai Tambi 顔彩耽美 (traditional Japanese colours)
• Gold leaf
• Silk fan
• Protective aprons

What to bring:

• Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little paint on
• A bag to carry your finished artwork home in the case of Manchester rain.

Good to know:

• Beginner-friendly — all levels welcome
• Ages 16+

Towards the end of the workshop, there will be an optional opportunity for photos, which may be used for social media and promotional purposes — just let us know if you’d prefer not to be included.
