Vivita / Lahenduste Laboratoorium invite grownups to Japanese Kintsugi Class - Japanese traditional repairing art for broken potteryKintsugi (金継ぎ) is Japanese traditional technique or art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with natural lacquer called Urushi (漆), tree sap grows in Japan.
Japanese Kintsugi is a very slow, step by step, long process with understanding about the unique character of Urushi lacquer, and it takes at least 2-3 months to complete all steps and process.
In this class, you can learn about the basics of Japanese Kintsugi from Hikari and try some different steps with getting used to know about the unique and fascinating character of Urushi. You can participate from 1 time but participating multiple times will deepen your understanding and experience. If you would like to understand and get the experience of all basic steps of Japanese Kintsugi, recommended to participate at least 5 times.
The philosophy behind Kintsugi is to highlight the beauty in imperfection including Wabi-Sabi (侘び寂び) spirit and to see the breakage as a part of the object's history and character, also deep appreciation for nature being. This spirituality of Kintsugi from Japan and slow work with your own hands and sense may give you a new perspective for your life and current fast-paced world.

*If you would like to attend 5 times but some dates might not suit for your schedule, additional lessons are possible upon consultation.
■ Basic steps and contents
・Lecture about basics, history and culture of Japanese Kintsugi
・Glueing broken part with mugi-urushi (麦漆)
・Filling chipped part with kokuso-urushi (刻苧漆) / sabi-urushi (錆漆)
・Shaving, Sanding, 1st painting with kuro-roiro-urushi (黒呂色漆),
Had better to repeat this step for 2-3 times
・Sanding, final painting with bengara-urushi (弁柄漆) or kuro-roiro-urushi (黒呂色漆)
Applying metal powder (粉撒き)
・Polishing (磨き), Fun-gatame (粉固め)
*This class is intended for grownups and conducted in English.
*This class will take place at the Vivita / Lahenduste Laboratoorium and your participation will also support the creativities of children and young people.

*It is also possible to repair your own broken items if you are planning to come multiple times. (cannot complete all process in 1 time)
In that case please ask in advance. Complex breakage or big item is more difficult and time consuming for beginners so recommend to try from small and simple breakage.
*Raw Urushi lacquer may cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes so please note about it. Recommend to wear long sleeves and avoid to touch raw Urushi for the first time. Disposable gloves will be provided.
