About this Event
Every year, between Christmas Day and Twelfth Night, I offer some longer semi-guided walks. These are not tightly-scripted affairs, but friendly gatherings, approx 5 miles long, that include a refreshment stop for lunch. As per my regular walking tours, I'll point out and talk about interesting, quirky and unusual things along the way, and we'll finish our day approx 4pm, probably in a pub. Some people like to stay for the full route, some may wish to leave early making use of the convenient bus routes and stations along the way.
.....................
This route starts near East India DLR station and taking us first down the eastern side of the Isle of Dogs with fabulous river views along the way, ending on the other side of the water with a view back to where we started.
We'll wander the quiet streets, paths and parks to investigate piers and slipways, powerstations and playing fields and we'll look at how modern developments sit side-by-side with London's maritime heritage.
In the morning section, it might be possible to access the foreshore, so please wear suitable footwear.
We will access the Greenwich side via the foot tunnel (there are lifts at each end) and walk back along the same stretch of river but along its southern path, passing a variety of intiguing structures along the way.
- One flat fee £15 – no concession rates for these longer walks.
- The exact meeting point will be clearly described on your confirmation sent via email immediately after purchase. This info will also be sent in a reminder email the day before the walk
- Food and drink is not included in the price.
- The lunch stop will be near Island Gardens. Please note that here are only a handful of pubs, cafes and convenience stores here. You might like to sit in the gardens and admire the view across the river as you eat your snacks, or you might prefer to walk ahead through to Greenwich where there are more options. NB: Cutty Sark (for Maritime Greenwich) station is closed until Spring 2026.
- The second part of the tour will recommence approx 2.30pm near the Royal Naval College (tbc on the day)
- The walk is designed to end near the O2 at North Greenwich station.
Customer feedback: "A fascinating walk with the ever knowledgeable and entertaining / "I love how you point out all the little quirks and make it so much more interesting than other academic-style guides. And you make it fun too. Thanks" / "...so engaging, thanks to your delivery style and obvious thirst for knowledge" / More feedback here
My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com
