About this Event
To conclude a day of workshops, model making and discussions, Jaime Bishop will talk about some of the ideas put forward for a more inclusive and accessible Margate Seafront.
Jaime is an experienced all-round designer with specialist skills in healthcare and has sat on the executive board of Architects for Health (AfH) since 2006. He has significant experience as the lead architect in major PFI schemes including the preparation of a reference project for a $2 billion teaching hospital in Adelaide, Australia. He has been a visiting tutor at various universities since 2002 including Nottingham, Cardiff and London Metropolitan. Since 2012 Jaime and Richard have been teaching third year degree level at London South Bank University and established their studio, The Transpontine Laboratory, based at the university in 2014.

About Fleet Architects:
@fleetarchitects
Fleet Architects, the host for the workshop: ‘A Plan for Margate – Margate reimaged for all’ on 28 October, was established in 2009. The practice applies high-quality design in the public and social sectors, including healthcare, community and education. Fleet’s founders Jaime Bishop and Richard Henson cherish and champion Margate, and in 2023 the practice opened a satellite branch above The Shakespeare public house – set between Margate station and the sea – which it owns and operates with the support of Kent County Council. The pub is a pillar in the community, supporting local charities and groups and hosting co-working, arts events, games nights and singalongs.
The field of architecture can exclude many, with inflexible working practices and unliveable wages. Fleet strives to be a fair and inclusive employer, paying Living Wages with no unpaid internships, and sticking resolutely to a 37.5-hour week for its full-time staff. Fleet actively encourages state-school children and girls in particular to consider architecture as a profession, offering work experience and regular workshops.
Just like The Shakespeare, which exemplifies the firm’s philosophy of embedding itself in a community through imaginative and empathetic design, Fleet’s buildings are designed to be lived in, learnt in, worked in, and healed in, respecting their locality’s history and identity while always innovating and adapting to reflect the realities of modern life.
