Construction worker Vince Everett (Elvis Presley) accidentally kills a drunken man in a brawl and is sentenced to 12 months in the state penitentiary. His cellmate, washed-up country singer Hunk Houghton teaches Vince some guitar chords and then convinces Vince to participate in an inmate show that is broadcast on nationwide television. Upon his release, with the help of a new friend, Vince decides to form his own label, and soon becomes an overnight sensation.
