If you thought diamonds were forever, you should consider jade. For millennia, this stone has been valued, revered, and imbued with meaning by many Asian cultures. Admired by emperors, praised by scholars, and frequently used as an ornament to enhance physical beauty, jade is believed to have life-prolonging qualities and considered by some to be more precious than gold. Over thousands of years, artists have drawn inspiration from nature and creatively worked jade into various sizes, forms, and shapes; meanwhile, many layers of meaning have been associated with the essence and quality of jade objects. This program presents the story of jade, beginning with a brief introduction to how the stone is worked, followed by an appreciation of select jade pieces with a focus on their function as well as their symbolic and auspicious meanings. Presented by the Asian Art Museum.
