About this Event
Ivanov embodies the profound Toska in Chekhov’s writing-a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause... a dull ache of the soul. In Chekhov's world, there is no shared narrative to hold a community together-only the lonely stories individuals tell in a desperate attempt at self-justification. Ivanov embodies this failure: his efforts to frame his life as meaningful collapses into delusion, alienation, and cruelty. Ivanov’s failed attempt at self-justification mirrors today's America, where the erosion of the arts and the absence of shared cultural narratives reflect our country’s collective sense of Toska and it’s want for change.
