Islands of the Self:

This interdisciplinary workshop, jointly organised by the University of Glasgow’s MVLS and the Islands in the Global Age ArtsLab, brings together specialists from medicine, philosophy, literature, theatre and film to explore new forms of care and understanding for people affected by extreme social withdrawal (hikikomori), ikizurasa (the pain of living), existential distress and autism. The programme includes short presentations from Prof Hamish McLeod and Prof Tadaaki Furuhashi who are world renowned experts in hikikomori, as well as interventions from Dr Maki Rooksby on ikizurasa, Dr Ramona Fotiade on existential distress, and Dr Graham Eatough on autism. The event is open to the public and intended as a platform for discussion and collaboration. A buffet lunch and refreshments will be served at the end so that participants can meet and talk to the speakers and the rest of the audience in an informal setting.
