Highlights of the Day -
THE WREKIN -
It’s (basically) an ancient volcano. The Wrekin is the remains of a volcanic plug. Formed around 500 million years ago.
What you’re standing on is hardened magma that never erupted
It looks isolated for a reason. It rises sharply out of flat land. That’s because it’s made of very hard rock that resisted erosion. Everything softer around it wore away over millions of year
*That’s why it’s such a landmark—you can see it for miles*
IRONBRIDGE -
The world’s first iron bridge, built in 1779. First major bridge ever made from cast iron.
Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
The gorge around it is where modern industry really took off.
Nearby was Coalbrookdale, famous for iron production.
This area changed the world—literally.
It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Recognised globally for its historical importance.
Not just the bridge—the whole gorge. Iron production innovation happened here. Abraham Darby developed a way to smelt iron using coke instead of charcoal. That made large-scale industry possible.
We also past pretty villages and walk along forested rivers.
2,500 ft of climbing, so good fitness required.
Check weather before and bring layers. Bring plenty of food and water to sustain you.
