“Verdigris” is a film about a middle-class, middle aged woman played by Geraldine McAlinden, who, trapped in an abusive marriage, takes on a part time job as a census taker. On her tough inner-city route, she faces dismissive and abusive locals who flatly refuse to engage in the census. This includes brash and no-nonsense teenager Jewel, who Marian soon realises is living alone with no obvious means of supporting herself.
Marian finds herself striking a deal with Jewel - she won't report her to the authorities if Jewel helps her get the locals to fill out their census forms. As they walk the streets of Dublin, an unlikely friendship blooms.
Please note that as the film deals with themes such as coercive control and sex workers’ rights, it may not be considered suitable for under 16s.
The film premiered at Galway International Film Festival in 2023 where it won the Best Independent Film Award.
The event is being made possible with the cooperation of Culture Ireland, the Irish Film Institute, and the Arts Council of Ireland. It is being offered for viewing at only 40 Irish Cultural Centers in the U.S., including the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley in Utica.
The event will be held at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley, 623 Columbia St, Utica, NY. The Irish Cultural Center and the H.A.R.P. Museum are wheelchair accessible and open to all.
