Ireland and Europe: the first EEC Presidency, 1975
About this Event
Ireland holds the Presidency of the European Council in 2026, the eighth such time it has held this position. This talk looks back at the first time the country took on the role in 1975. Recently accessioned to the European Economic Community in 1973, Ireland at the time was grappling with various foreign policy objectives and challenges. From alignment with its continental partners to fraught Anglo-Irish relations during the troubles, this talk examines how foreign policy was shaped and influenced by the country’s time in the European hot seat.
Documents on Irish Foreign Policy publishes archival material on Ireland’s foreign relations since 1919 and is a partnership project of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the National Archives, and the Royal Irish Academy.
Speaker: Dr Nora Moroney, Assistant Editor with the Royal Irish Academy's Documents on Irish Foreign Policy programme.
