About this Event
Who is the course for?
This short course is aimed at quantitative researchers and data analysts who are familiar with linear regression methods and would like to learn the fundamentals of binary response models: logistic regression. It covers concepts like odds, odds ratios and predicted probabilities. It also provides practical examples using both cross-sectional and longitudinal data. The course is online and free to attend.
Pre-requisites: Attendees are expected to:
- Know about the Understanding Society design and data collection procedures. This material is covered in the course Introduction to Understanding Society.
- Have a basic knowledge of linear regression (OLS)
- Have a working knowledge of using Stata (via use of syntax files or do files) for data management and analysis
What will I learn?
• Key features of binary response models.
• The basics of logistic regression
• Data management for binary response models
• Analysing research questions using logistic regression
Course content and format:
This is an intensive free two-day course that will run from 10am-12noon & 1-3pm on January 30th and 31st, 2025. The course is a combination of lectures and hands-on sessions where participants will work through worked out examples aimed at helping them learn how to implement logistic regression taught in the lectures. The data used in these exercises will be Understanding Society and the statistical software used will be Stata. Further details about the course and the course schedule will be provided later.
The workshop will be online via Zoom. The participants must ensure that Stata version 13 or later is installed on their computers and they have downloaded the UKHLS data (instructions will be provided on how to do this prior to the workshop).
Course materials:
Participants will be provided with the lecture slides, and the Stata syntax files to implement some worked-out examples.
