TOPIC: This workshop covers a topic pertinent to both supervisors and employees.
Today law enforcement agencies are facing greater challenges and scrutiny than ever before. There can be no tolerance of low and poor performing staff.
Using interactive techniques, Dr. Bender will guide participants through the essential steps to conduct a performance appraisal that is effective and compliant with legal requirements.
Participants will learn how to:
- Structure the performance appraisal discussion
- Measure performance
- Facilitate self-evaluations
- Set developmental expectations.
The importance of communication will be highlighted, and various approaches to measurement will be presented. Documentation requirements, and practical advice for new and experienced supervisors will be thoroughly covered.
Scenarios that will be discussed include:
- Dealing with the problem employee
- The marginally acceptable performers
- The employee who has checked out.
Emphasis will be on strategies that help the supervisor address problematic people and situations.
DETAILS:
• This is an online Zoom Meeting program. It is a live, interactive workshop and participants will be required to have their cameras and microphones on and be able to be seen for the entire time.
• Between the two sessions you will be asked to do some “homework” designed to increase your effectiveness in creating performance appraisals. That work will be discussed in the second session.
• Each session is two hours in length – four hours total for the two sessions.
• Registration is limited to 50 participants on a first come-first served basis.

TARGET AUDIENCE: This training is especially valuable for those in supervisory positions or in human resources. It is applicable for anyone in law enforcement, city, county, or state government supervisory positions (City Manager’s office, public works, etc.).
Separate online training is available for individual agencies or command staffs.
