Welcome to the wonderful world of hot wax painting! Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of painting. In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of the encaustic studio with a modern twist, incorporating encaustic, found objects, and ephemera.
We will create encaustic “skins” to use as collage elements and incorporate found objects and ephemera to create unique and beautiful art pieces. Please note there is no class on 2/18
Class Overview
Week 1
Fundamentals of the encaustic studio /safety
Week 2
Board prep and project planning
Week 3
Create encaustic collage elements, cutting-out elements, and shellac work
Week 4
Studio work day
Week 5
Putting it all together, troubleshooting, and critique
***Please Note that there is no class 2/18***
All materials will be provided for the class, however, students should bring the following if desired:
- Additional encaustic paints for extended use
- Background colors (e.g., watercolors or pastels) for experimentation
- Personal stencils for unique designs
- Hake brushes for creating custom colors
- Extra cradled boards for additional projects
Please dress appropriately for painting or wear an apron. Gloves are recommended but not provided. While PAL ensures good ventilation and safe wax heating levels, students concerned about fumes should bring their own PPE masks.
