Intro to SLR/mirrorless photography, including manual settings (2 days)

Important notes:

1. This is a two day course: 11/10 and 11/17! Registration gets you access to both days. See above for agenda.
2. The class will be held in the upstairs of an old building with no elevator. If you have mobility issues, please reach out before you sign up. We have a solution but I’ll send you details first.

Despite all the advances in modern technology, the basics of photography haven’t really changed in the last 100 years. The three basic variables (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) are as fundamental to every digital photograph today as they were to every film photograph taken in generations past.

This class will explain how they all affect your photos, when to adjust them, and when to let the camera do the thinking for you. The best way to learn is by actually doing it so come prepared to do some shooting!

Things we’ll cover:

1. Standard shooting modes: TV, AV, M, B, P, etc.
2. ISO
3. Exposure compensation
4. White balance
5. Exposure bracketing
6. Metering modes
7. Analyzing the histogram
8. Introduction to different lens types
9. Basic principles of composition and lighting
10. Introduction to JPG vs. RAW files

Things to bring:

1. Camera (any camera with a removable lens will do)
2. Any other lenses you may have
3. Tripod if you have one
4. The camera’s manual if you have it
5. An object to photograph (should be no smaller than a bottle of nail polish, no larger than a beer can, and able to stand up on its own.)

Info: Day one will cover an in-depth explanation of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and all the ways they affect your photos. You'll be given a shooting assignment to work on over the week until the next class.

Info: Day two will get into all the other manual settings of your camera, the basic principals of lighting and composition, an explanation of JPG vs. RAW files, and an introduction to different lens types.
