About this Event

What to expect: Come explore the science and art of nature journaling! We’ll meet inside the Nature Center to learn a variety of techniques before we head out on the trail to put our new skills into practice. All levels of journaling experience are welcome. The full program lasts 2 hours. Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants for our time on the trail. Please bring your own journal if you can. (We will have a few extras for those who aren’t able to bring one.)

We’ll provide art supplies and instruction, but you’re more than welcome to bring your own tools.

Program leader: Your guide will be Ranger Karsten Bobb, a DeKalb County Park Ranger at Arabia Mountain.

Where to meet: Find Ranger Karsten inside the Nature Center (3787 Klondike Rd.).

What to bring: Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and outdoor hiking shoes. We have to hike 1 mile to get to our sketching spot and 1 more mile to get back to the Nature Center. Please bring your own water and any snacks you might need to stay energized and hydrated throughout the morning. If you have an easily transportable camp chair or outdoor sitting mat, feel free to bring those as well. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection, as well as insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are available in front of the Nature Center. You will look for a brown building with red doors.

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for all ages.

Dogs: This program is NOT appropriate for dogs, so please leave your pup at home.

Weather contingency: This program will be held rain or shine unless conditions are deemed unsafe by DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs (RPCA).

Walking distance: 2 miles (1 mile out and 1 mile back)

Exposure: This walk is mostly under shaded tree canopy.

Trail surface & accessibility: This program stays on established soft trails of mixed terrain. There are sections of the walk that are quite steep and also have exposed roots. Questions if this program will work for your mobility? Reasonable accommodations may be available upon request. To request an accommodation, please contact the program organizer at least 48 hours in advance of the event. Contact Ranger Karsten: [email protected]
