About this Event
Discover the joy of storytelling, laughter, and community this summer at Eastbourne Park!
Presented by Laal Button in partnership with the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO), Intro to improv is a free, welcoming 5-week workshop series designed specifically for newcomer, and culturally diverse seniors in Brampton.
Led by celebrated local artist and comedian , these interactive sessions use lighthearted improvisational games and oral storytelling to help participants build confidence, share their life journeys, and connect deeply with their neighbors.

Important Information for Attendees:
- Cost: 100% Free. Registration is required so we can prepare materials and refreshments.
- What to bring: Please wear comfortable clothing for being outdoors and bring a water bottle. Shaded seating areas will be provided.
- Weather Policy: Public safety is our priority. Laal Button actively tracks the weather. In case of rain or extreme heat, registered participants will be notified 48 hours in advance via email/WhatsApp with details for our indoor backup location.

Week 1 ([Insert Date]): The Art of "Yes, And" (Introduction & Icebreakers)
Info: Focus: Cultural Acceptance & Group Trust.
Description: Introduction to the core improv tenet of "Yes, And," presented through the lens of South Asian hospitality and community building.
Activities: Culturally relevant warm-up games to build "ensemble" trust and active listening.
Creative Output: A Storytelling Circle where participants share "first impressions" of their arrival in Brampton.
Week 2 ([Insert Date]): Characters & Living Memories (Finding your story)
Info: Focus: Narrative Structure (Who, Where, and Why).
Description: Moving from simple games to identifying the "characters" and "settings" in the seniors' own life journeys.
Activities: Physical warm-ups and association games. Introduction to the "Arc of a Story."
Creative Output: Participants begin to isolate specific personal anecdotes for potential performance.
Week 3 ([Insert Date]): Rhythm, Verses & Tradition (Bringing culture to life)
Info: Focus: Integrating Tradition (Music & Poetry).
Description: Incorporating traditional South Asian rhythmic expressions, such as Boliyan (Punjabi folk couplets), into the improv structure.
Activities: Advanced games exploring how to "play" with tone and tempo in storytelling.
Creative Output: Seniors choose their performance style: individual storytelling or a group "Communal Monologue."
Week 4 ([Insert Date]): Emotional Connections & Spatial Awareness
Info: Focus: Emotional Connection & Spatial Awareness.
Description: Learning to act out scenes without props ("Object Work") and developing deep relationships between characters on stage.
Activities: Role-playing exercises focusing on objectives—what does the character want in this story?
Creative Output: Drafting the performance pieces and experimenting with improvised audience prompts.
Week 5 ([Insert Date]): The Open-Air Practice (Building stage confidence) Gran
Info: Focus: Performance Confidence & Stage Presence.
Description: A full-scale rehearsal in Eastbourne Park. This serves as a "soft opening" to build comfort with the public environment and ambient noise.
Activities: A Storytelling Open Mic where seniors practice projected speech and engaging with a live audience of passersby.
Creative Output: Finalizing the "Set List" for the Grand Finale.

Week 6 (August 27, 2026): Final Showcase Event
Info: Format: A 90-minute celebration event held in late August 2026 at Chinguacousy Park.
Welcome & Introduction: Hosted by Sunny Diwanaa and Sahilpreet Singh, introducing the BAO initiative.
The Performance: A mix of individual storytelling pieces, Boliyan verses, and Communal Monologues (3 seniors on stage at a time).
Improvisation: Sunny will take prompts from the local audience, and the seniors will improvise scenes on the spot—showcasing their quick thinking and creative growth.
Intergenerational Reception: A post-show gathering where participants, youth volunteers, and the neighborhood can mingle and share feedback.
Legacy: The showcase will be recorded for Laal Button’s digital platforms to highlight the impact of the Arts in the Parks program.
