About this Event
Interwoven: Beading for Mindfulness and Creating Lasting Traditions
Special Operations Forces Spouses are invited to join The Station Foundation for an afternoon beading workshop to practice mindfulness. Art invites us to slow down and be present. It gently captures our attention and offers meditative benefits. The benefits of crafting with beads include improving fine motor skills, visual perception, focus, and concentration. Crafting encourages us to be curious, let go of expectations, explore possibilities, and delight in color and texture. During this relaxing workshop, participants will make a beautiful, beaded Christmas spider.
The Legend of the Christmas Spider is an Eastern European folk tale that explains the possible origin of tinsel on Christmas trees. For some, finding a spider or a spider’s web on a Christmas tree is considered good luck. According to the legend, a poor but hardworking widow once lived in a small hut with her children. One summer day, a pine cone fell on the dirt floor of the hut and took root. The widow's children cared for the tree, excited at the prospect of having a Christmas tree by winter. The tree grew, but when Christmas Eve arrived, they could not afford to decorate it. The children sadly went to bed and fell asleep. Early the next morning, they woke up and saw the tree covered with cobwebs. When they opened the windows, the first rays of sunlight touched the webs and turned them into gold and silver. The widow and her children were overjoyed. From then on, they never lived in poverty again.
Crafting a spider will serve as a tangible reminder that we can reframe our perspective to enjoy the simplest of traditions during the upcoming holiday season. While we may feel pressured to DO more, BUY more, and pack our schedule to maximize the holidays, we have the choice to delight in small, quiet moments to create lasting traditions and be intentional with our time and resources.
