Insulating with Straw provides an detailed introduction to straw-insulated wall systems, appropriate for many climates including the cold Northeast. This class is for anyone who wants to learn about how the abundant, bioregional resource of grain straw can be used to create beautiful and high-performing walls. Students will receive both hands-on and classroom instruction over two days. By building a light straw-clay insulated model wall, we’ll explore the effects of packing technique, framing details, and clay binder. Expect to walk away with a solid understanding of the principles that will let you successfully insulate with straw, and the confidence to start breaking into bales!This class does not cover plastering – we recommend the 9/19-20 Plaster Fundamentals and 9/26-27 Natural Paints workshop for those who want hands-on time with sealing and finishes for straw wall systems.
The 2-day workshop runs from 10 am to 4 pm on both days.
