About this Event
The World Affairs Council will present journalist Charu Gupta at an Instant Issues lunchtime discussion event on The Multiple Mythologies Behind Hindutva and its Rise to Political Prominence in India Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at noon in the 1350 Main Street 9th Floor Gallery in downtown Springfield.
This event will not be recorded so please make every effort to attend if you are interested.
Charu Gupta is an award-winning journalist. She has worked for newspapers in Alabama, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Her reporting on police shootings and the 2008 foreclosure crisis in Cleveland won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and The Press Club of Cleveland. Charu is at work on her first novel and is a 2024-25 Five College Women’s Research Center Associate.
This talk will examine the emergence of Hindutva, a potent and violent form of anti-Muslim, pro-Hindu nationalism, as a product of colonialism, savvy marketing, and the failed economic promises of post-Independence India.
For those who purchase a meal, box lunches with a choice of sandwich--turkey, tuna, roast beef, vegetarian--will be available (first come, first served). Lunches also include deli salad, a cookie, chips, and soda or water. (Attendees may bring their own lunch or choose not to eat.)
Registration deadline for a lunch provided is Tuesday, October 22.
