About this Event

Inside the horse's mind: A demonstration of the dissection of a horse's brain

A free lecture using fresh brain tissue in our new laboratory to help us explore how the horse's brain generates pleasure and responds to stress.

The second event in our 2026 lecture series will take place on Wednesday 20 May 2026 from 6pm (doors open at 6pm with the lecture starting at 6.30pm) to 8pm in our brand new, state-of-the-art, Land Laboratories (LL23) at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU).

The lecture, entitled Inside the horse's mind: A demonstration of the dissection of a horse's brain, will be delivered Dr Andrew Hemmings, Associate Professor of Equine Research Leadership at the RAU.

In this fascinating demonstration you will learn about how the pleasure and stress response generated by the horse's brain relates to wellbeing and training in the domestic horse.

We will also explore what the horse's brain can tell us about mental health in humans, with reference to drug addiction, neurodiversity, and other traits such as impulsivity.

This session will involve the dissection of fresh brain tissue in our new laboratory, so please do make sure you are prepared for this when making attendance decisions.

The speaker:

Dr Andrew Hemmings has been working as a lecturer in horse behaviour and welfare at the RAU for 27 years, during which time his research has focussed on the equine brain and how it controls behavioural processes.

He is well known for delivering engaging sessions that are relevant to both the scientific community and public alike.

Above all he is passionate about the use of behavioural neuroscience to improve the health and wellbeing of horses in our care.

Come along to discover the brain as it relates to the wellbeing in the domestic horse.
