About this Event
Hi! I'm Irene, a busy professional juggling work, life, family, community service, adventures, and a love of books. What I need, and what I'm hoping some of you might love, is a trusted circle of fellow mid-career professionals. Others who might enjoy the feel of a buzzing tavern full of fascinating stories and ideas. Others willing to meet someone unexected and learn something new.
WHO: I'm seeking curious, brave-hearted, open-minded souls who love books. You should be a mid-career professional -- not just out of college in your first 5 years working and not 5 years from retirement.
WHEN: The “Inquiring Minds Book Club” meets 4-5 pm Pacific time on zoom, generally on the last Thursday of every month (with some exceptions due to travel or holidays).
WHAT: Our books are all nonfiction -- leadership, self-development, science, memoir, biography, etc. -- driven by the curiosity of those that attend. We spend two months on each book so that we can explore, meditate, and allow the ideas to percolate into our being. Thus, we discuss questions and quotes the first month, then come back together to reflect more deeply about insights and inquiries in month two. That also means you get two months to finish the book just in case life gets in the way of our best intentions. Those who attend help select the new book.
Here's a list of some of the titles we've read in the past:
- Designing Your Work Life by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans
- Atomic Habits by James Clear
- Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Kimmerer
- The Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal
- Your Brain is a Time Machine by Dean Buonomano (We took a virtual field trip to the Royal Observatory in England to check out their exhibit on time. Super fun!)
- A Letter to My Daughter by Maya Angelou
- The Comfort Book by Matt Haig
- Emotional Agility by Susan David
To read or not to read the book is up to you. We're busy professionals, many of us with kids at home. If you don't read the book, we trust that it's for a good reason. Or maybe you just didn't like the book. No judgement. Each session begins with a guided activity inspired by the book so that even if you didn't read, you have something to talk about.
No long-term commitment is expected. Join every month or just for that one book you are dying to read. That said, I hope it quickly becomes the one Zoom meeting you would be devastated to miss.
NOTE: As long as you sign up for one ticket for any date this year, you'll be added to the email list to receive updates for all future events, including updates on the next book, and Zoom link reminders. Unsubscribe anytime.
