Ink & Identity: Chan Buddhism and Expressive Brushwork (In-Person Painting)
About this Event
About this event
Explore the relationship between Chan Buddhism (禅宗), traditional Chinese ink painting and creative self-expression in this relaxed, hands-on workshop.
Taking inspiration from Bodhidharma (达摩), a legendary figure closely associated with the development of Chan Buddhism in China, participants will look at examples of traditional Chan paintings and explore how simple brushstrokes can communicate movement, character and emotion.
The workshop will introduce expressive ink techniques inspired by traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. Rather than focusing on accuracy or perfection, participants will be encouraged to slow down, trust their intuition and experiment freely with line, texture and movement.
Through guided exercises and individual painting, participants will create their own interpretation of Bodhidharma, with opportunities to explore different brush techniques and approaches.
The session will conclude with a personal finishing touch using red ink or paint and a fingerprint, creating a simple individual mark inspired by the visual language of traditional seals and signatures.
No previous experience of painting or calligraphy is required. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in Chinese culture, traditional ink art and a more mindful approach to creativity.
