The Influence of Egyptian Dance on Burlesque Workshop
Presented by Bonne et Belle Burlesque & Kayla Meirelles
In this workshop we will learn how Egyptian Dance came to be one of the most influential art forms for burlesque and how its traditional movements were used by American burlesque dancers from the late 19th century.
This class will include a culturally conscious and informed mini-history lesson followed by a movement class demonstrating traditional Egyptian dance moves and their burlesque counterparts.
Beyond basic movement, we will also learn how Egyptian cultural and musical values offer more depth and nuance for any dancer to discover, doing a deep dive into how you can use improvisation and momentum to create a truly unique act filled with embodiment and feeling.
