About this Event

This day of talks delves into some of the fascinating technical and engineering history of Oxford and its region, with time enough to explore the city. Talks include the origins and evolution of car-making in Oxford and the development of other important local industries, to the start of engineering at the university and its amazing influence on 20th-century technologies:

Detroit-on-Thames: the origins of car making in Oxford and the rise of the Cowley factory, Maurice East

Combe Mill: a workshop for the Blenheim Estate, Richard Stone

Mechanicks in the universitie: how engineering came to Oxford, Richard Darton

A brief history of printing in Oxfordshire, Richard Lawrence

Allen's of Oxford: from steam ploughs to motor mowers, Jonathan Brown

Watermills of the Thames in Oxfordshire, Brian Eade

This is a chance to meet others in the region with a view to starting regular events in Oxford.

Easy access using Peartree and Thronhill Park and Ride buses.
