Speaker: Nancy Lori, DAR State and Chapter Chair of American Indians
Program: Indigenous Footprints: A Journey with American Indians in Michigan
About the Program: Did you know that there are 12 federally recognized Native American Indian Tribes in the State of Michigan? Nancy Lori is joining us today to share a presentation called Indigenous Footprints: A Journey with American Indians in Michigan. This program will give you an overview of the history of American Indians in Michigan from the time of the Great Migration Walk, encounters with the French and British, the signing of various treaties, and what is occurring in the present time.
About the Speaker: Nancy Lori lives in Holland, Michigan, and serves as the State Chair for American Indians in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She also serves as American Indians Chair of her Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton Chapter in Holland. Nancy has always had a strong interest in history and American Indian history in particular. She and her husband lived many years in Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula, where they were in close proximity to several U.P. tribes. During that time, they traveled extensively in the American Southwest and eventually moved to New Mexico, where they were surrounded by Indian Pueblos and exposed to their culture, traditions, stories, powwows, feast days, and art on a daily basis. Since returning to Michigan, Nancy and her husband have made it a mission to make others aware of the amazing talent of Michigan’s Native woodland artists and to help preserve the history of Michigan tribes for future generations.
About the School Bell Series: The School Bell Series is a free community program where guest speakers explore a wide range of topics connected to state and local history.
