It may be June 14th on the calendar, but at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater, it’s the hottest day of the summer. You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can DO THE RIGHT THING (1989)! Screening in 35mm. The Mahoning Drive-In Theater continues our “Indie Darlings” series with Spike Lee’s vibrant, moving, hilarious, harrowing, and incendiary tale of race relations in Bed-Stuy, a film that brought Lee’s style to mainstream audiences and shook the pillars of Hollywood upon its release.
Take a trip to Brooklyn in the late 1980s, in a neighborhood where African-American, Italian, Hispanic, Korean and Caucasian residents have an uneasy relationship, and as the temperature continues to rise, so do long-held prejudices and tensions in and around Sal’s Pizza, run by an outspoken proprietor who’s just as ready to sling slurs as dough.
Spike Lee’s first studio film is a celebration of culture, music, and passion, while at the same time being a cautionary tale of what can happen when our differences weigh heavier on our minds than our commonalities.
With a stunning cast including Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robin Harris.
“Indie Darlings” is an ongoing series at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater, presenting films made by pioneers of the indie spirit, as well as notable independent films that made waves upon initial release, whose ripples are still felt to this day.
