This concert brings to Berlin a sound built on the deep, human timbre of the Sarangi, an instrument prized in Indian classical music for its uncanny closeness to the human voice. Sarangi Maestro Ustad Ikram Khan performs with his ensemble as part of their Europe Tour 2026, joined by Vahid Khan on Tabla and Ishrat Kalavant on vocals, in an evening celebrating the living tradition of the Sikar Gharana.

Ikram Khan hails from a renowned family of Indian classical musicians of the Sikar Gharana in Rajasthan, and grew up in Ahmedabad under the tutelage of his father, Ustad Nizamuddin Khan, a top-grade Staff Artist of All India Radio. Following his father's untimely passing, he was mentored by Pandit Krishnakant Parikh, senior-most disciple of Pandit Jasraj, and simultaneously by Sarangi Maestro Ustad Liaqat Ali Khan of Bombay and Ustad Muneer Khan of Delhi. In 1989, he became the senior-most disciple of the legendary Sarangi Maestro Ustad Sultan Khan, who designated him as his "Khalifa" — marking him as a torchbearer of the Sikar Gharana's legacy. Over a career spanning decades, Ikram Khan has accompanied some of Indian classical music's most illustrious names, including Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Pandit Nandan Mehta, Ustad Hidayat Khan, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Pandit Ajay Pohankar, and the legendary Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj, among many others. He served as a Top Grade Staff Artist with All India Radio from 1989 to 2023 and has performed extensively across Europe, the United States, Canada, and Morocco. In 2022, he was felicitated in Dubai with the prestigious "Bharat Gaurav" (Pride of India) award in recognition of his contribution to Indian classical music.

Join us on 3 August for an evening of the Sarangi's singing voice — a rare opportunity for Berlin audiences to experience a living lineage of Indian classical music, carried forward through generations of guru-shishya tradition.
