Incense Making with Kristi Chen

'on earthing & petrichor' artist Kristi Chen guides us on a 2-hour workshop on the origins and process of making incense. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of personal and ancestral uses of incense, and we will encourage this sharing over the course of the lesson. This workshop fee covers all materials and the instructor's time. Capsules aims to keep prices low-barrier and accessible; donations above the required fee are welcomed but not mandatory. 'on earthing and petrichor' is Capsules' inaugural exhibition, curated by Roya Delsol.

About the artist:

Kristi Chen's multi-disciplinary practice weaves together narratives of migration, intergenerational knowledge, and cultural adaptation. Through her works, she explores the complexities of her ancestral history, connecting it with her own diasporic experience. Raised across diverse regions—Singapore, the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong—her practice reflects the influence of constant movement and the interplay between traditional cultural practices and the modern world.

About the exhibition:

“on earthing and petrichor” positions the natural world as a space of respite, rooting, recuperation and regrowth. This space of aliveness creates a lush site of personal and political growth; amidst the rise of fascistic violence, pandemics, economic distress, climate change, anti-intellectualism and individualism. In contrast to a low-trust society experienced by many in the West, the natural world models a symbiotic and thriving ecosystem. How does a connection to nature engender a belief in a better world, and in doing so, inspire us to reconnect and build alongside each other? “on earthing and petrichor”  is a multidisciplinary group exhibition featuring the work of Kristi Chen, Oreka James, Phuong Nguyen, Chiedza Pasipanodya, Deepikah RB, Erica Whyte and Jenny Vong; curated by Roya DelSol.
