BEWARE - PICKLEBALL MAY BE ADDICTIVE!
PICKLEBALL CHEAT SHEET:
“Too many cooks in the kitchen!” - The kitchen, also called the no-volley zone, is that area right up by the net. Don’t volley the ball while standing in it. Wait for the bounce before stepping in. No cooking allowed unless the ball hits the ground first.
“Bounce before you pounce!” - After the serve, the ball has to bounce once on each side before anyone starts volleying. Let the ball bounce, then attack. This keeps the game fair and balanced at the start of each point.
“No toe on the line, you'll be just fine!” - When serving, make sure both feet are behind the baseline. If your toe touches the line, that’s a fault. Keep those feet back and stay in bounds to make your serve count.
“Serve it to earn it!” - Only the team serving can score. If you’re not serving, you’re playing defense. Focus on winning your serve, because that’s the only way to add points to the board.
“Start right to play right!” - Games always begin with the serve coming from the right-hand court. From there, players rotate sides as points are earned. Starting from the right helps keep everything flowing smoothly.
“Keep it low, let it go!” - All serves must be underhand with the paddle below your waist. This isn’t tennis, so keep your swing low and controlled. A good serve is smooth and sneaky, not wild and high.
“Return and stay stern!” - When you return the serve, don’t rush the net. That next ball still has to bounce before you volley it. Stay back, keep your cool, and wait for your moment.
