7 miles - booking essential, T&Cs applyThe mountain hare is one of only two UK mammals that turn white in the winter. The Peak District contains the only mountain hares in Great Britain outside Scotland and a small population on the Isle of Man. However, the Peak District population is threatened with extinction by global warming and there is evidence that the numbers are declining, particularly in the area covered by this walk. Search for any remaining mountain hares, in their winter coats, on the dramatic slopes above Ladybower Reservoir.
Hares shelter in a 'form', which is a shallow depression in the ground, but when startled they will leap across the moors on their powerful hind legs, often in a zigzag shape.
Suitable for children over 10 years old but be prepared to walk 7 miles on very rough, steep ground.
Event Grade: Hard - longer more challenging walks usually with ascents and descents and rough terrain.
Extra Items: Bring binoculars if you have them.
Event Terrain: Some rough and steep walking off the path amongst rocks and heather.
Meeting Point: Fairholmes Visitor Centre, Derwent Lane, Bamford. From the A57 where the road crosses the Ladybower Reservoir, follow the brown tourist sign to Derwent Valley Dams, then to Fairholmes Visitor Centre.
