4 miles - booking essential, T&Cs applyAn introduction to navigation comprising a short classroom presentation followed by practice on a walk in the Hope Valley. The course focuses on map reading and covers navigating without a compass, mainly using rights of way. It includes an introduction to map types and scales; map symbols; the National Grid system; grid references; distances; contours and the shapes of the terrain; orientating the map using topographical features and relating it to the ground.
Event Grade: Easy - short walks on paths that may be rough and uneven. Taken at a leisurely pace. May involve stiles and rough ground.
Extra Items: OS Explorer map (1:25,000) OL1 The Peak District - Dark Peak Area; a pen or pencil.
Event Terrain: Short sections along the road and good, well-drained footpaths but 2 sections across fields which may be wet and muddy. One gradual ascent.

Parking: Please note that there is no parking available at the Centre. Please park in the Pay and Display car park near Edale Station. From the car park, walk 200 yards towards Edale Village under the railway bridge. There are toilets at the P&D car park but none at the Visitor Centre.
