Exploring barriers and the progress in cycling for women and gender diverse riders with April Drage, Emma Mickle & Dr Bridie O'Donnell
About this Event

Thursday 15 October | 6pm - 7pm
Queen Victoria Women's Centre, Melbourne

As part of Chain of Command, a photographic and art exhibition celebrating women who ride and the stories shaping Melbourne's diverse cycling culture, join us for an intimate conversation exploring the realities of cycling through the lens of gender, identity and belonging.

While cycling has long been associated with freedom, community and adventure, barriers to participation still exist for many women and non-binary riders. From representation and visibility to safety, access and inclusion, this panel will unpack the challenges that continue to shape the sport, while also spotlighting the people and initiatives creating meaningful change.

Moderated by Dr Bridie O'Donnell; former professional cyclist, medical practitioner, author, and the first woman to commentate the Tour de France for SBS Cycling; the discussion brings together a diverse panel of riders whose experiences challenge convention and expand what is possible on two wheels.

Joining Bridie will be Emma Mickle, para-cyclist, Ironman triathlete and LA 2028 Paralympic hopeful and April Drage, ultra-endurance cyclist, community ride leader and cycling advocate.

Together, they'll share personal stories, insights and perspectives on the future of cycling culture, and what it takes to create spaces where more people feel empowered to ride.

Whether you're a lifelong cyclist, a curious spectator, or someone considering getting on a bike for the very first time, this conversation invites you to reconsider who cycling is for and how we can build a more inclusive future together.
