Join us for “Impro Start” – an evening marking the opening of a new season of Vilnius University’s improvisation studio IMPROVU!
What happens when actors step onto the stage without a script? They have to listen, react, trust one another and create in the moment. Expect improv games, unexpected situations, plenty of laughter and moments that simply cannot be planned in advance.
The evening will be hosted by Vytautas Kontrimas, artistic director of IMPROVU, actor, educator and applied improvisation practitioner.

What is improvisation?
If you have never encountered improv before, here is the short version: it is theatre without a predetermined script. Actors create scenes, characters and stories on the spot, often using suggestions from the audience.
Improvisation has been part of theatre since Antiquity and particularly flourished in the commedia dell’arte tradition between the 16th and 18th centuries. In the 20th century, it became an important method of actor training and gradually developed into a theatrical form in its own right.
But improv is useful far beyond the stage. It develops listening and communication skills, quick thinking, self-confidence, creativity, adaptability and the ability to stay calm when things do not go according to plan. In other words, improv teaches you to become more comfortable with uncertainty – a skill that comes in handy in your studies, at work, in relationships and in everyday life.

IMPROVU is looking for new members!
IMPROVU is VU’s improvisation studio, founded in 2021 to bring together students who want to explore improvisational theatre, build confidence on stage and learn to create together in the moment. Studio members develop performances and take part in various University events.

The event is organised by the VU Culture Centre, home to 16 artistic groups and creative studios. Every year, the Centre invites the University community and the wider public to discover cultural experiences across a variety of genres.

📍 Getting to the VU Theatre Hall. Due to ongoing renovation works, the VU Grand Courtyard, K. Sirvydas Courtyard, Church of St Johns and Bell Tower can currently be accessed only from Pilies Street, via the Library Courtyard and M. K. Sarbievijus Courtyard.

Kas yra improvizacija?
Jei su improvizacija dar neteko susidurti, trumpai – tai teatras be iš anksto parengto scenarijaus. Aktoriai scenas, personažus ir istorijas kuria čia ir dabar, dažnai pasitelkdami žiūrovų pasiūlymus.
Improvizacija buvo teatro dalis dar Antikos laikais, o ypač suklestėjo XVI–XVIII a. commedia dell’arte tradicijoje. ** a. ji tapo svarbiu aktorių rengimo metodu ir ilgainiui išsivystė į savarankišką teatro formą.
Tačiau improvizacija praverčia gerokai už scenos ribų. Ji lavina gebėjimą klausytis ir bendrauti, greitai mąstyti, pasitikėti savimi, kūrybiškai reaguoti ir išlikti ramiam, kai viskas vyksta ne pagal planą. Kitaip tariant, improvizacija moko jaustis patogiau nežinomybėje – o tai praverčia studijose, darbe, santykiuose ir kasdienybėje.

IMPRO VU – 2021 m. įkurta VU improvizacijos studija, suburianti studentus, norinčius pažinti improvizacijos teatrą, stiprinti sceninį pasitikėjimą ir mokytis kurti kartu čia ir dabar. Studijos nariai rengia pasirodymus ir dalyvauja įvairiuose universiteto renginiuose.
