Première canadienne de la nouvelle restauration 4K!
Quatre longs métrages ont suffi pour hisser l’effroyable Ilsa la tortionnaire au rang d’icône de la série B. Souvent plagié, mais jamais égalé, ce personnage controversé incarne aujourd’hui un pan entier du cinéma d’exploitation. Toujours interprétée par la colossale Dyanne Thorne, cette globe-trotteuse a causé des ravages partout où elle a posé ses bottes. Elle a même marqué l’histoire du septième art québécois avec le déviant ILSA, THE TIGRESS OF SIBERIA!
Réalisé en 1977 par Jean Lafleur (la publicité d’Astar le robot!) et produit par Cinépix (avec Roger Corman et Ivan Reitman sous pseudonyme), cet ultime épisode de la série a été entièrement tourné dans la Belle province. Mieux encore, le second acte se déroule carrément à Montréal! Le film comporte donc une indéniable saveur locale, avec un match de hockey dans l’ancien Forum ainsi que des scènes anthologiques de poursuite en motoneige.
Ilsa se moquant de la continuité, on la retrouve d’abord à la tête d’un camp du Goulag en pleine toundra soviétique. Le jour, elle fait la vie dure aux dissidents politiques. Le soir, elle se prélasse lors de fêtes orgiaques où la vodka coule à flot. Son règne de terreur est toutefois mis en péril par l’avènement d’un détenu qui ose lui tenir tête. Commence alors une odyssée gore qui transportera la despote vers les rives du fleuve Saint-Laurent.
Mettant en vedette un fauve mangeur d’hommes, une souffleuse à neige tout aussi vorace et un grotesque ancêtre de la réalité virtuelle, ILSA, THE TIGRESS OF SIBERIA s’adresse aux cinéphiles qui n’ont pas froid aux yeux. Cette perle du cinéma de minuit épate autant par sa surenchère d’hémoglobine que sa bouffonnerie grivoise. Les nuits de la 4e dimension a l’honneur d’être l’hôte de la première canadienne de sa restauration 4K, une initiative de Kino Lorber!

It only took four feature films to elevate the terrifying ‘Ilsa’ to the status of ‘B’ movie icon. Often imitated but never equaled, this controversial character embodies an entire segment of exploitation cinema. Always played by the colossal Dyanne Thorne, this globetrotter causes chaos wherever she stomps her boots. She even made her mark on Quebecois cinema with the deviant ILSA, THE TIGRESS OF SIBERIA!
This 1977 film, directed by Jean Lafleur (the infamous ‘Astar the Robot’ commercial!) and produced by Cinépix (with Roger Corman and Ivan Reitman under pseudonym), would be the last of the Ilsa series, and was filmed entirely in Quebec. Even better, the second act takes place in Montreal! The film has an undeniable local flavour, with a hockey match at the old Forum, as well as montage scenes of snowmobile chases.
Continuity is not important, as Ilsa is first found at the head of a Gulag camp in the middle of the Soviet tundra. By day, she makes life difficult for the imprisoned political dissidents. By night, she revels in orgies where the vodka flows freely. But Ilsa’s reign of sexual terror is soon threatened by the arrival of a new prisoner who dares to stand up to her. Thus begins the gory odyssey that will take the despot to the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
Featuring a man-eating beast, an equally voracious snowblower, and a grotesque ancestor of virtual reality, ILSA, THE TIGRESS OF SIBERIA aims itself at cinephiles who are not easily intimidated. This gem of midnight cinema impresses as much with its excess of bloodshed as with its bawdy buffoonery. Les nuits de la 4e dimension is honoured to host the Canadian premiere of the 4K restoration, an initiative of Kino Lorber.
