Den Seewinkel muss man erlebt haben, um ihn wirklich erklären zu können. Flach, weit, sonnenüberflutet — und umgeben von Salzlacken, die eigentlich mitten in Österreich nichts zu suchen haben. UNESCO-Welterbe, Nationalpark und eines der unverwechselbarsten Weinterroirs der Welt.
Das Weingut Salzl Seewinkelhof bewirtschaftet es seit 1840. Drei Generationen — Heribert, Josef, Christoph — haben sich alle bewusst dazu entschieden, hier zu bleiben und Wein zu machen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Bandbreite, die zeigt, was die Region wirklich kann: Zweigelt mit der Fruchttiefe und Dichte, die nur der Neusiedlersee hervorbringt; der New Style Chardonnay, den Josef 1993 als einer der ersten in Österreich im Barrique ausgebaut hat; die Josanna — benannt nach Christophs Kindern — ein Rotwein, der alles vereint, was ein großer Burgenländer sein soll; und edelsüße Weine, ermöglicht durch die Botrytis, die zuverlässig vom See hereinzieht.
Micha Scheible, der uns bei unserem ersten Besuch in Illmitz durch das Weingut geführt hat, ist an diesem Abend dabei. Er kennt diese Weine in- und auswendig — und hat die Gabe, den Abend so zu gestalten, dass man sich eher im Seewinkel fühlt als im 19. Bezirk.

The Seewinkel is one of those places that's hard to explain until you've been there. Flat, wide, sun-drenched — and surrounded by salt lakes that have no business being in the middle of Austria. It's a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, a national park, and one of the most distinctive wine terroirs in the world.
Salzl Seewinkelhof has been farming it since 1840. Three generations — Heribert, Josef, Christoph — all made a deliberate choice to stay and make wine here. The result is a range that covers the full width of what the region can do: Zweigelt with the depth and fruit density that only the Neusiedlersee can produce, the New Style Chardonnay that Josef first aged in barrique back in 1993 when almost no one in Austria was doing that, the Josanna — named after Christoph's children — which is everything a great Burgenland red should be, and noble sweet wines made possible by the Botrytis that drifts in reliably off the lake.
Micha Scheible, who took us around the winery on our first visit to Illmitz, joins us for the evening. He knows these wines inside out and has a talent for making the evening feel like you're sitting in the Seewinkel rather than the 19th district.
