This is Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi, one of the iconic European auteurs of both the 20th and 21st centuries. In her original love stories, always marked by a distinctive aesthetic and mesmerizing visual framing, she tells tales of the age-old love between a man and a woman—its elusiveness, the longing for the ideal, and the magical contours of a heart touched by dreams. What is actually reality, and what is merely a fleeting dream? And does humanity still have hope of becoming noble and compassionate?
Together with the director’s new film Silent Friend, which explores the fateful connection between the main characters across different historical eras and a majestic tree in a botanical garden, we will present her magnificent black-and-white debut My 20th Century —a fantastical play on words and a meditation on humanity’s squandered opportunities on the threshold of modernity, the eagerly awaited and hopeful 20th century.
