Workshop duration: 4 Days ( 4 Hours each)
Time: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Date: 6,7,8,9 December 2026
Location: ElGouna, Red Sea
Venue: To be announced
------
Outline of the workshop:
If Only There Was a Photo is a four-day photography workshop taught by visual storyteller Tasneem Alsultan, exploring the importance, responsibility, and power of photographic documentation. While the invention of the camera is more than a century old, the authority to document and ultimately decide which stories are seen, remembered, and believed has historically remained largely in the hands of a few.
This workshop asks: What happens when there is no photograph? Who gets to document history, and whose perspective is missing?
Drawing from Alsultan's 15 years of experience finding stories, photographing communities, editing, sequencing, and publishing work internationally, the workshop combines discussions and photographic principles with practical, in-person assignments. Participants will explore how to identify meaningful stories, approach subjects with intention, make photographs that hold context and meaning, and develop a body of work through editing and sequencing.
Across four days, participants will consider photography not simply as an act of image-making, but as a form of documentation, authorship, and historical record and the responsibility that comes with deciding what, and who, gets to be seen.
NOTE: participation in this workshop is subject to portfolio submission.
Workshop Structure:
Day 1 — Finding the Story
The first day introduces the principles of storytelling and documentary photography. Participants will explore how to identify a story, develop an idea, and think about framing, context, and intention. Through discussions of previous photographic work, participants will consider different approaches to documentary practice before developing a storyboard and preparing for their own assignment. The day will also address the practical and ethical considerations of approaching and photographing people.
Day 2 — Looking & Editing
Participants return with photographs from their assignments and begin the process of looking critically at their own work. Through group discussion and editing exercises, we will examine what makes an image meaningful, how individual photographs work together, and what can be removed. The emphasis is on learning to edit with intention rather than simply selecting the strongest-looking photographs.
Day 3 — Image, Context & Voice
Building on the previous day's edit, participants will continue refining their work and consider how photographs communicate when placed together. The day introduces the relationship between image and text, including captions, titles, and short contextual statements. Participants will explore how words can provide information, challenge assumptions, or change the way an image is understood.
Day 4 — Sequencing & The Professional Practice
The final day focuses on bringing the work together as a cohesive photographic story. Participants will work on final editing and sequencing while considering how a body of work can be presented for different audiences and platforms. The workshop will also introduce the practical side of publishing photography, including approaching editors, pitching stories, understanding image rights, and protecting copyright.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have experienced the complete process of developing a photographic story—from finding and documenting a subject to editing, sequencing, contextualising, and considering how the work enters the wider world.

"If Only There Was a Photo" هي ورشة تصوير فوتوغرافي تمتد على مدار أربعة أيام، تقدمها صانعة القصص البصرية تسنيم السلطان، وتستكشف أهمية التوثيق الفوتوغرافي ومسؤوليته وقوته.
