Did you know that 1 in 5 Australians reported that they had a mental or behavioural condition?
In supporting this statistic and acknowledging that psychological injury is the fastest growing injury type in NSW, icare want to promote greater awareness on creating a Mentally Healthy workplace and a better understanding on how you can support your workforce should they be impacted by psychological injury.
The purpose of this event is to:
- Provide tools on how to identify early indications of mental health challenges
- Assist with prevention and support for individuals within workplaces and your local community
- Give practical advice on managing recovery and engagement

Special Guest Speaker – Matthew Elliott
Matt is a former professional Rugby League Player, NRL Coach and the co-founder and creator of the Change Room. In combining his qualifications (Bachelor of Applied Science) and career experience, Matt aims to inspire people to improve their physical and Mental Health by exploring better practices used in high-performance sports environments.
Creating Mentally Healthy Workplaces
Managing psychsocial risk is not just the law - its good for your people and its good for business. In this session, we break down the terminology and take a practical lens to understanding your obligations and what you can do within your business today to better manage risk and invest in the wellbeing of your organisation.
Following this session, you'll understand why it's important for your business and you'll be armed with resources to make a meaningful progress.
Presented by Jo Bartley - icare Injury Prevention Manager & Karly Henry - icare Senior Safety & Wellbeing Specialist
Jo is an experienced HR and Safety professional, specialising in safety culture, psychological safety and psychosocial risk. Prior to icare, she was the Head of Psychological Safety at a federal government agency. Having spent the last decade in the nuclear industry, her strategic approach to implementing and imbedding holistic safety practices in hazard-dense environments has seen her work with both public and private sector organisations nationally and internationally.
Lifecycle of a Psychological Injury Claim
During this session we will talk through what to expect following a workplace psychological injury. You will hear about the various stages of a claim, as well as be provided with tips for the best ways to respond and support both your injured worker and workforce.
You will learn how different approaches to a claim by an employer can lead to very different outcomes and what to expect during the claims journey. You’ll also hear about the new online Mental Health Hub that's been developed, where you can find all sorts of information to assist you and your business with mental health claims.

Ben works as a Mental Health Lead in icare workers compensation.
The Mental Health team at icare has an operational focus and works closely supporting our claims service providers in the mental health portfolio, consulting as a subject matter expert. Ben has twenty years of experience in the NSW workers compensation scheme
Understanding the Legal Perspective of a Psychological Claim
This session will look at what is required from a legal perspective to successfully respond to claims for psychological injury. The session will walk through real-life examples, and will provide practical tips on how to respond to psychological injury claims including case studies.
Presented by - Miriam Browne - Turks Legal, Partner
Since her admission to practice Miriam has worked exclusively in the areas of statutory workers compensation claims and work injury damages. Her career has spanned numerous periods of reform and she is well versed in navigating the complexities of this area of law.
Miriam’s experience is highly valued by her insurer, self-insurer and employer clients who benefit from her practical, strategic and whole of business solutions.
